Mababe River
Private Reserve

The Mababe concession also known as NG41 is one of Botswana’s best-kept secrets in terms of game viewing. It is located in the heart of the Kavango-Zambezi trans frontier conservation area – the largest transfrontier conservation area in the world. The landscape is diverse including floodplains, Mopane woodland,  terminalia forests, and ancient camel thorn trees that line the Khwai-Mababe river.

NG41 spans c.100,000 hectares and lies approximately 115 km north of Maun. It is nestled in and around the Mababe depression on the eastern flank of the Moremi Game Reserve and on the southern flank of Savuti and Chobe National Park. Mababe is easily accessible being on the famous Maun-Chobe route used by mobile safari companies and adventurous self drive clientele who often make long journeys across this contiguous raw wilderness.

A road network that traverses along the Khwai river makes Mababe river private reserve an exceptional area for game viewing with abundant game and visibility. Large herds of elephant and buffalo, pods of hippos, and other prominent mammals and birdlife are found year round due to the ready access to water from the river. The abundance of prey also means that the probability of predator sightings, especially lions, leopards, and wild dogs, is high.

One of its most unique and attractive features is the river-front campsites, offering more water-front accommodation than any reserve outside the delta. This offers unparalleled game viewing and convenience for visitors from your campsite itself.

Spending a few nights in Mababe river private reserve en-route to Chobe, Savuti, Khwai community concession or Moremi will really enhance the ex-Delta wildlife experience on a safari to Botswana. Under a new private sector collaboration, camping sites at Dizana have been separated to accommodate mobile safari operators, whilst camping sites at Tshaa will be given to self drive clientele.
